Chapter 4
Roles & Ranks


DETECTIVE I

Previously as a Police Officer III, you have the opportunity to continue your carrier as a patrol officer or take a detour to the Detective Bureau. You have the ability to choose the path of a detective if you successfully completed a competitive Detective's examination and interview. A Detective I is usually assigned to a specialized duties such as warrants & crime scene forensics handler. You are also given an extensive amount of time to get familiar with the duties of a detective such as; responding to crime scenes, conducting preliminary and follow-up investigations, preparing the required investigative reports, preparing a biopsy of the report, apprehending the suspect and preparing the case for successful prosecution.


DETECTIVE II

A Detective II is the next promotional step in the Detective series. It is the official position and is responsible for displaying a good role model to Detective I's & Police Officers. Some duties are along the line of, conducting narcotics or weaponry investigations, preforming covert surveillance, maintaining contacts with informants; investigate gang related crimes respond to and investigate scenes of crimes such as homicide, theft, robbery, auto theft, illegal sex related activities; and, crimes committed by juveniles. In conclusion, a Detective II may act as a Watch Commander; providing equipment and their expertise to the field.


DETECTIVE III

A Detective III has shown great work habits, great leadership and has preformed extensive contributions to the department. Detective III are responsible for serving as a leader in high profile cases that involve illegal crimes. They also review reports prepared by his peers(Detective II's) and informs his superior on the current status of the pending investigations. They also provide training to new Detectives, provide their expertise on and out of the field and supervise the newly assigned Detectives as well as their administrative duties with the Commanding officer.

Commanding Officer

They're the head of a specialized division under the Detective Bureau. They're supervisors of a squad that handles a certain type of criminal activity. Currently there are only two divisions, Gang & Narcotics and Criminal Intelligence Division.


Commander

Being the Commanding Officer of a specialized division, the Commander plans, organizes and directs the work of Commanding Officers. In addition, a Commander interviews & hires new detectives, reviews activity reports and sends out reports on the division to the administration department of the Police Department.




Head of the Detective Bureau



After serving as a Sergeant or Detective, one is eligible to be promoted to the next classification on the ladder upon a successful completion of a competitive Lieutenant's examination. Similar to a Second Level Manager for a large corporation, a Lieutenant I manages, plans, organizes, and directs the work of both sworn and civilian employees engaged in the operation of an assigned watch or a 24-hour team in a police division or an investigation unit or detail. They are in-charge of a specialized division or section, where he or she must apply sound supervisory principles and techniques to build and maintain an effective work force. The may also supervise the activities of his or her subordinates; coordinates specialized training and ensures sufficient stock of tactical supplies and equipment; maintains liaison with appropriate Department entities; acts as a leader at the scene of crime; and/or reviews and completes all reports for the approval of a Captain.

Examples include;




Manages all the administrative and operational aspects of the bureau.
Oversees evidence and property room procedures.
Deals with all the department's forfeitures.
Assigns Criminal Investigation Cases.
Communication with the mass media on large scale investigations.

Detective III - Sergeant II



When you have reached Detective III, you are most likely going to be in charge of a units within the bureau. You are responsible for serving as a leader in high profile cases of major robbery, fraud, and homicide in addition to the duties of a Detective I and II. A Detective III reviews reports prepared by his/her subordinates, informs the commanding officer of the status of the pending investigations, provides technical expertise, trains and supervises newly assigned Detectives and civilian personnel, and performs related administrative duties. You are equal to a Sergeant II and you have the authority to punish Detectives within your division. You are not allowed to take any action on patrol officers or anyone out of your division, although you may consult their supervisor.

Examples include;




Oversees both divisions.
Oversees the operations of detectives within both divisions.
Assigning Arrest Warrants.
In charge of a division within the Bureau
Oversees the operations of detectives within his division
Assigned as a working supervisor who is charged with not only conducting his own investigations, but overseeing the investigations of the field detectives as well as reviewing reports for case assignments.
Assigning Arrest Warrants.
Evaluating detectives within the divisions.

Detective II - Senior Lead Officer



A Detective II is the next promotional step in the Detective series. They oversee the activities of Detectives I and Police Officers. Some of the specialized duties performed by a Detective II include: undercover narcotics investigators, internal affairs investigators, and traffic accident follow-up investigators. On occasion, a Detective travels to other parts of the country or overseas to extradite suspects wanted in connection with crimes committed in the City of Los Santos. In this capacity, a Detective maintains liaison with international law enforcement agencies, conduct narcotics investigations, perform surveillance, and establish and maintain contacts with informants; investigate gang related crimes; respond to and investigate scenes of crimes such as homicide, theft, robbery, auto theft, illegal sex related activities; and, crimes committed by juveniles. In addition, a Detective II may perform court liaison functions; act as a Watch Commander; provide electronic equipment expertise to conduct surveillance and polygraph examinations; and, conduct investigations of crimes committed by gangs of foreign origin.


As a detective II, you have the ability to preform operations with patrol officers when you have consulted your division leader. You have completed your training phase and you have the authority over patrol units as a Detective II. You also have the ability to engage in any activities S.W.A.T may ask for.

Examples;



Following up on leads.
Tracking down suspect(s).
Evidence collection.
Crime scene photography.
Surveillance.
Interview and interrogation.

Detective I - POIII



From a Police Officer II, with two weeks prior to becoming a POII classification, one can also choose be promoted to a Detective I position after successfully completing a competitive Detective's examination and interview. A Detective I is often assigned to a specialized division and is responsible for responding to the scenes of crimes, conducting preliminary and follow-up investigations, preparing the required investigative reports, preparing a biopsy of the report, apprehending the suspect, preparing the case for successful prosecution, and testifying in court. Detectives not may supervise and/or coordinate the activities of a detail or unit engaged in investigating various crimes or activities. They are equal to the rank of a Police Officer III and have no authority to lead or enact on an operation on their own.


If they are called in by S.W.A.T to gather information, they are to no engage with the raid/search but they are to engage in obtaining information on the environments locations, its surroundings and other requests S.W.A.T asks for.


They are not allowed to lead a group of individuals in any raids, searches or even sting operations. You are still in your training stage and you are not well familiar with all the protocols a detective must preform.

Examples:



Evidence collection.
Crime scene photography.
Surveillance.
Interview and interrogation.
